The first Buffalo performance of Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Pirates of Penzance was conducted by composer Arthur Sullivan himself–he wielded the baton in the 1880 premiere, only a few months after conducting the world premiere on Broadway in December 1879. Now the riotous musical extravaganza returns to the Riviera Theater in North Tonawanda for three performances, January 20-22. One of the best-loved operettas of all time, The Pirates of Penzance features comic masterpieces like “I am the very model of a modern major general” and “The policeman’s lot is not a happy one,” alongside gorgeous melodies like the waltz “Poor Wandering One.” Opera-Lytes presents a fully-staged traditional production, with orchestral accompaniment, that is a tuneful treat suitable for the whole family!
